This is one of those questions that I suppose is probably best saved for a drunken night, but it's something that has got to me for a while now (just ask James!)
Essentially - where do lost things go...they must be somewhere, and if they are somewhere, then they are not lost, right? WRONG. If I can't find them, then they are lost. Do they all go to some secret location where they can see us frantically looking for them;some zone with wallets, keys, mobile phones, Monsters Inc DVD's and the letter G, all watching, smiling, laughing while I go mad trying to find them.
Take the DVD as an example. I don't take DVD's out the house, not even out of the living room, so where on earth is it?
I think the thing that makes lost things worse in our house is that I don't deal with it well as I just can't comprehend it. I freak out, become a wild woman until it's found. If it's not I huff for days about where it can possibly be.
My latest is writing a list of lost things on the kitchen notice board, what irritates me more than lost things is not being able to remember what is lost.
Maybe I need to get out more.

He lives in your house but no-one knows where and he takes things, mainly odd socks but when he's bored with that he moves on to other things like mobile phones, keys, jigsaw pieces, bolts from MFI and IKEA furniture, cellotape, lightbulbs (the type you happen to need at that time) and AA batteries.
My only possible, yet not overly practical solution, is to tie everything onto lengths of string and follow it until you find the missing item. Assuming, that is, that you can find the string!!!
Jill: The sock monster in our house is called J.A.M.E.S - he regularly pairs up socks wrongly making me thing we have 2 odd socks, until I go to put them on myself or kids and find them! Or puts my socks in Krystals drawer (yeah, go figure!) Not complaining, at least he tries :o)
