Meet Scruffy

The newest member of the Buckingham family.  The reason that he has come into existence is that Kory has given up his dummy, though not by choice!  We decided a while ago that after our holidays that would be it.  So we discussed it with Kory, told him he could choose a teddy to put it inside after Cyprus, we visited the bear factory in town as well and he seemed ok with the idea.

So on Sunday after we'd been to the cinema, we went back to the bear factory and he chose Scruffy.  I asked him if he wanted one last suck of it before it went in, but he didn't.  So in it went!  He then chose his name and we got his birth certificate.

We came home after that and Scruffy was shown Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (Kory's current obsession!) and he had to sit and have dinner with us, which we humoured for one night only as we were making it his special day!

Come bedtime, the reality set in.  Although he understood where his dummy was and why, he didn't like it and said he wanted it back.   He was sobbing on and off for about an hour, with us going up and down the stairs reassuring him, then he burnt himself out and fell asleep.

The following night, he still asked for it, and still cried, but for much less time and I think we were only back into his room 3 times in total which was lots better!  Last night was night 3 and Kory didn't even mention the dummy at bedtime.  He did shout for James once, but to tell him that Mr Pussycat (another toy) wasn't feeling well and needed tucked in.  Still no mention of it at all!  So all in all I think it's going well.

There has always been a reason until now not to take it away like me being ill when pregnant, Krystal being a rubbish sleeper, Christmas, toilet training & Krystal having a dummy too.  But the plus side of having waited this long is that he totally understands whats happenning.  The  thought of removing Krystal's when she has no understanding is terrifying!

Anyway, we're really proud of how he's doing and coping with the change.  For those who actually know Kory, you'll know he's a creature of habit who doesn't like change.  I'm so glad he knew in advance and had time to accept it, I think if we'd just sprung this on him he'd have really freaked out about it.

Kelly's Gravatar Well done little man (or should I say big man now???).
I remember taking Jasmines diddy (dummy) off of her when she was not much younger than Kory is now and we did exactly the same build up to it for her. Putting it inside a teddy is genius though, Jasmines one went to the easter bunny for it's babies and Jassy got an extra large easter egg in return, with all that chocolate to put in her mouth instead (it lasted over a week) she really didn't care about the diddy any more.

Jillybaby's Gravatar You should never have to justify your timing, he's YOUR child and it's YOUR decision (as long as he's not 5!). My 2 were about the same age when we got rid. As it was summer, Heather's 'doo' was taken by Santa so that he could recycle them in time for Christmas. He left her a buggy and baby doll too (not easy finding xmas wrapping paper in July).

Hamish was slightly different. He had a 'dummybib'. He would suck on the dummy whilst stroking the satin label from a bib. The 2 always went together. When we took away the dummy, we thought maybe he could keep the bib as a comforter but he showed little interest after the dummy was gone. Around the time we were going to get rid of it, he accidentally chewed the teet off and we never replaced it.

The bear idea is genius though (as long as you don't wake up to Scruffy in a thousand pieces on the floor and the dummy back in Kory's mouth!!!).

Kelly's Gravatar That stroking a satin label thing rings a bell don't you think James? Who do I know that used to like silky labels???? LOL

Julie's Gravatar Yeah, M&S knickers labels I do believe he used to steal them out of the (clean) washing pile to rub the labels over his top lip!!

James's Gravatar I'd like to just say that I no longer have that "bad" habit. It was my New Year Resolution to quit this year :-D.

Jillybaby's Gravatar I forgot to mention this in my last comment. My friend's daughter didn't have a dummy at all, she sucked her thumb instead until she was around 6 I believe. Anyway she's now 8 and she's just been fitted with a brace because her tongue doesn't sit in the correct resting position which should be at the roof of her mouth. Instead it hangs down and sticks out too much because she's expecting a thumb to be there. She's had to learn how to eat properly all over again as she wasn't chewing her food correctly either.

So in short, she's having major dental work at only 8 years old. Just goes to show, you can take a dummy away but you can't take a thumb away!
