Apples

In the car yesterday, Kory was trying to explain adding and subtracting to Krystal, it wasn't going too well so I decided to illustrate the point using (theoretical) apples so she could imagine having objects.  Here is the conversation that followed:

Krystal: What is zero add one?

Me: You tell me

Krystal: I don't know

Me: Ok, let's think about if the numbers are apples.  If you have zero apples and Kory gives you one apple, how many apples do you have?

Krystal: ZERO!

Me:  No, it can't be zero, where has the apple Kory gave you gone?

Krystal: I ate it!
